One area of your bedroom that always faces a space crunch is the wardrobe. Do you also struggle to fit all your clothes and necessary accessories in the wardrobe because of a lack of proper planning? If yes, then this article should be your wardrobe bible. With the knowledge of the standard wardrobe dimensions and with proper planning you can design a space that can fit all the elements like a piece of cake.

A wardrobe usually consists of three basic elements - drawers, a hanging closet, and shelves which help in arranging the accessories, clothes, shoes, and other essentials properly. An intelligently curated wardrobe also helps in keeping your room clutter free and organised.

So, what is the standard height of a wardrobe? What should be the wardrobe depth and the ideal wardrobe size? Let us answer all your queries by taking up different types of wardrobes and their required dimensions.

Hinged Wardrobe/Swing Wardrobe

The front doors of these wardrobes have simple hinges fixed on them.

  • A hinged wardrobe depth is ideally 24 inches. If you do not have enough space in your room then you can go for a depth of 22 inches, however, this depth would not be adequate to hang clothes.
  • The wardrobe’s height should match the doors’ lintel level which is 84 inches or a full height wardrobe can be created by utilising the space from floor to ceiling.
  • A double-door or single-door wardrobe’s door panel should not exceed a width of 24 inches, otherwise, the hinges will be overloaded.

Sliding Wardrobe

These wardrobe panels slide on the tracks and are ideal for tight spaces. Hence, they have named wardrobes with sliding doors.

  • The average depth of a sliding-door wardrobe should be 64 cm, this also includes a running track which is about 4cm. This track allows the free movement of the sliding panels. Ensure that you consider the spacing of the sliding panel otherwise your clothes are most likely to get stuck in it.
  • The width of the sliding wardrobe panel should not be more than 120 cm. If it exceeds this number then the glide will be too heavy to open and close again.

Men’s Wardrobe

Men’s Wardrobe

A clear division has been drawn between men's and women's wardrobes because of the difference in the height in hanging the garments. Men generally do not require a ceiling height wardrobe for their clothes in comparison to women.

  • For folded pants, jackets, and shirts, the minimum height of each hanging section should be at least 100 cm in a wardrobe.
  • A gap of at least 7 cm should be maintained between the top and the rail of the wardrobe so that there is enough space to remove or add hangers.
  • Usually, a bulky coat is a part of the men’s wardrobe, so you need to ensure that the wardrobe depth is anywhere between 70-76 cm. This measure will help in preventing the coat’s sleeves to get stuck within the door panels of the wardrobe.

Women’s Wardrobe

If ballgowns and evening dresses are a considerate part of your wardrobe, then you should definitely consider the element of height while designing the right-sized design.

  • To hang the women's garments such as full-length dresses and gowns, the hanger section should have an average vertical clearance of 165-182 cm. It also depends on your wardrobe manufacturer, you can get the height adjusted according to your individual height.
  • You should hang folded pants, skirts, formal tops, and blouses in a small section that has a height of 100 cm.

Tip: Include open shelves or drawers to keep the folded items like hats, shoes, etc. Ensure that a gap of at least 30-55cm between each shelf is maintained.

Children’s Wardrobe

Children’s Wardrobe

Children’s wardrobes require less space, however, the most economic practice is to invest in a larger wardrobe. A larger wardrobe allows extended usage spanning from childhood to adulthood.

The wardrobe size of a kid should be as follows:

  • You can install poles to hang clothes by dividing the wardrobe’s vertical length into three sections of about 70 cm each. In this way, numerous smaller-sized garments can be stored in one compartment. The lower poles in the cupboard can be removed with the growth of the child.
  • Drawers should measure between 15 and 35 cm to accommodate the folded clothes including accessories like books or toys.

Tip: Open shelving can be installed to store items that have to be piled like towels, nappies, shoes and linen. The open shelves should be at least minus/plus 30 cm apart.

Walk-in Wardrobe

You are spoilt for choice when it comes to the walk-in wardrobes. However, the size of your bedroom will be the key factor in determining the final wardrobe dimensions of your walk-in wardrobe. Ensure that:

  • There is enough space for you to operate between the clothes and shelves.
  • The wardrobe can be easily accessed

Tip: If the walk-in closet installed is narrow, then consider choosing the doors as sliding panels as they save up a lot of space.

Loft Wardrobe

Loft Wardrobe

A loft is an extra space above the wardrobe usually used as a storage area to store all the extra items that are not required every day. Blankets, winter garments, and other accessories can be stored in the loft while they are not required for the season. A loft provides an access to unreachable spaces in the wardrobe while also making the room look clutter-free. It also helps in saving ample space for clothes, accessories, and other necessary elements. A standard loft has a wardrobe depth of two feet and a width of six feet to ensure adequate storage.

Wardrobe Drawers

Wardrobe Drawers

Wardrobe drawers are necessary for easy access and storage of your delicates, accessories, and other essential items. So if you want to install multipurpose drawers then a depth of eight inches is perfect.

  • For smaller drawers and the utilisation of hanging area and bottom shelves, your drawers can be designed with a depth of four to six inches.

Shoe Rack

Shoe Rack

A shoe rack in the wardrobe is of utmost importance and is considered to be the ideal storage option for your fancy evening sandals and shoes if you do not want them to get ruined by the sneakers in your shoe closet.

There are numerous ways in which you can design your shoe rack keeping in mind the standard wardrobe dimensions. Thin rods can be installed to arrange your shoes in neat rows, and you can install cloth hangers in the wardrobe which have special pockets for your shoes. The shoes can also be placed in pullout trays which have an approximate height of six to seven inches. This area can also be customised according to your needs, especially if you have designer gladiators or long boots.

  • The height of each shoe shelf should be around 6-7 inches. This is ideal for storing flat shoes, high-heeled shoes, sandals, running shoes, or shoes that are stored in boxes.
  • Long boots can be stored in a section of the wardrobe which has a height of around 18-20 inches.
  • The shoe cabinets’ depth should be around 15 inches.
