- White acrylic high-gloss on all three walls. Light comes in from the window and the ceiling and it goes everywhere - bouncing off every cabinet face simultaneously. Small kitchens feel bigger. Darker kitchens feel brighter. The finish earns its cost in both directions.
- Dark granite or black quartz on the countertop running all three walls. Strong dark horizontal plane against the all-white vertical surfaces. That contrast is the whole visual argument of this kitchen and it makes itself without needing anything else.
- BWR plywood carcasses, 18mm, throughout. Three walls in active daily use means the structural material gets tested consistently. Boiling Water Resistant grade handles it. Standard plywood eventually doesn't.
- Under-cabinet LEDs across all three walls. The full U-shaped work surface is lit. No corner goes dark, no preparation area is working in shadow. Consistent task lighting throughout - the layout delivers it, the LEDs complete it.
- Integrated chimney, hob, oven, microwave. Anything surface-mounted or protruding disrupts the seamless white aesthetic across three walls. Integration is what keeps the all-white visual language intact.

8×8 feet. Below that and the aisle between the facing counter walls - which should be 36 to 42 inches - gets too narrow for two people to work without getting in each other's way. The U-shape only delivers its full functional benefit when the circulation space inside it is generous enough to actually use. Every additional foot of room width translates directly into a better daily experience.
Acrylic is non-porous. Turmeric and masala sit on the surface rather than soaking in - damp cloth, done. Oil smudges show up clearly on gloss white, that's just what the finish does, and they come off just as quickly. Daily wiping after cooking keeps the brilliant surface looking right. Most people develop the habit within a week and stop thinking about it. Demanding isn't the word - different is.
Water marks and fine dust show more clearly on dark surfaces - honest answer. Granite needs sealing once or twice a year. Quartz needs nothing. Both stay looking right with a dry cloth wipe after cooking rather than any specialist routine. When going through the kitchen quotation, ask for the sealing schedule for granite to be included in the handover information - it's a simple maintenance task that's much easier to establish as a habit from day one than to start after the surface has already been neglected.
Standard practice. The window wall gets the sink positioned directly below the opening - natural light on the prep and washing zone, upper cabinets on either side of the window. The upper cabinet run is interrupted on that wall but the functional logic of the layout is unchanged. Natural light above the sink is actually the best position for a kitchen window regardless of layout.
Built for it. Three walls of counter means large pressure cookers and woks can be set down, staged, and moved between zones without the spatial squeeze that single-wall or L-shaped kitchens force on serious multi-dish cooking. The hob zone takes a 3 or 4-burner hob and a high-power chimney sized for the actual cooking volume. For families investing in this as part of a full home interior design renovation, the U-shape delivers the best functional return per square foot of any layout - more counter, more storage, better separation of cooking zones, all in the same footprint.
